ABOUT BRUSH MEDITATION

A New Way to Experience the Japanese Brush

Brush Meditation is a new lifestyle practice that brings a quiet moment with the brush into everyday life.

Rooted in the Japanese culture of calligraphy, it invites you to slow down, touch brush and ink, and simply enjoy the act of making a mark.

There is no need to write beautifully.

There is no need to create a perfect work of art.

Hold the brush.

Breathe.

Draw one line.

A simple moment to reconnect with yourself.

This autumn in Paris, BUNKODO will present Brush Meditation for the first time in Europe, together with its newly developed Japanese Calligraphy & Brush Art Set.

THE CRAFT BEHIND THE BRUSH

KUMANO BRUSH

Crafted by Hand in Hiroshima, Japan

Kumano brushes have been made in Kumano, Hiroshima for more than 180 years.

Today, the town remains one of Japan's most important brush-making regions.

One of the defining characteristics of Kumano brush making is the careful use of the natural tips of the hairs rather than simply cutting them into shape.

Through numerous processes and the sensitive work of skilled artisans, different hairs are selected, combined and shaped to create brushes capable of remarkably delicate and expressive lines.

At the Paris exhibition, visitors can discover not only the finished brushes, but also the materials, techniques and human hands behind them.

BUNKODO

Japanese Brush Maker Since 1907

Founded in Kumano, Hiroshima in 1907, BUNKODO has been making Japanese brushes for more than a century.

For generations, its artisans have preserved the traditional techniques of Kumano brush making, crafting each brush carefully by hand.

Today, BUNKODO is exploring a new question:

“What role can the Japanese brush play in our lives today?”

Brush Meditation is one answer.

Rather than preserving the brush only as a tool of traditional calligraphy, BUNKODO seeks to bring its tactile beauty, craftsmanship and expressive possibilities into contemporary life.

From Kumano to Paris, we invite you to discover a new relationship with the Japanese brush.
